Sanemi is definitely an admirable fighter, and his relationship with Genya is a compelling part of the emotional weight of the last arc of the manga. His personality is quite douchey, but seems consistent with what you could expect from someone who has had to fight people-eating monsters from a very young age.
Marked Sanami and Gyomei are undoubtedly stronger than Muichiro but unmarked Rengoku is complete fodder compared to a marked Muichiro. I wouldn’t even say Rengoku is top 8 in the Hashira. I agree with urmomlikesbbc but at the same time I feel that giyuu beats him by my the end of the manga. His will power and confidence grows. He has a draw w sanemi during their training. If rengoku would’ve continued into the hashira training or even get his fathers approval I feel like he’d be undeniably stronger than giyuu.

In my opinion, he’s a bit overrated. Don’t get me wrong, he’s 2nd strongest but people act like base Sanemi neg diffs every Hashira other than Gyomei. Sanemi outshines his fellow Hashira comrades in demon battles, but other than that, he’s equal to Giyuu and Rengoku imo. You can put Tengen in there too actually.So I’m placing Giyuu below Obanai.
